Congratulations to Jim McKay

John, My 12' Power Dinghy is finally completed!

I decided to use genuine mahogany and was able to buy planks locally.  The strips were milled and received bead and cove edges.  The transom is 6/4" mahogany.  I glued the strips around the mold stations and held them in place with spring clamps and weights constructed from water-filled milk jugs, cord, and S-hooks. I redesigned the interior.  I prefer seating along the gunwales and the seats stiffen and brace the entire boat.  The seats conceal compartments for coolers, safety equipment, and personal items; they also allowed for passage of electrical wiring. I elected to use a 55# thrust electric motor.  The forward compartment houses three batteries and an onboard charger.  The motor raises and lowers with pushbuttons and reverses when the handle is turned 90 degrees.  Max speed isn't great but the boat has a range of 20-25 miles on a single charge. Brass or bronze was used on all hardware: cleats, navigational lights, hinges, hatch fasteners, deck plate, protective strips on skeg and bow point, and flag pole socket. I also installed a stereo system, compass, courtesy lights, depth finder, 12volt outlets, and a fused switch box for the electrical system.  I modified a trailer to eliminate rollers and added carpeted bunks to protect the hull. The boat never fails to gather attention on the launch ramp.  It is unique, quiet, inexpensive to operate, and eco-friendly.  It will comfortably carry 4 adults on a pleasure cruise or 2 adults for fishing. I would be happy to respond to anyone regarding construction, design, or materials through my E-mail account:  mckay_jim@msn.com.
